Key #1 - Connect your weight loss goals to your values. It'll supply the intrinsic motivation you need to increase the sustainability of your efforts to lose weight. Your values are those top 3-4 things in life that are most important to you, whether it be family, career, health, etc. Get clear on your values and connect your weight- loss goals to those things or people that matter most to you. You'll then have the drive you need to keep pushing forward when experiencing the challenges of establishing healthy habits.
Key #2 - Modify your environment. Change the stimuli in your environment to reduce the temptation to eat foods that are packing on the pounds. Environmental engineering is a way of tailoring your household, workspace and anywhere you spend a lot of time to support your weight-loss goals. At home, that means to get rid of the potato chips, ice cream and sugary snacks. Replace them with healthy fruits and treats that will help you stay on track. At work, that may mean to bring your own lunch and snacks, instead of settling for the fattening foods provided by coworkers and bosses. Key #3 - Incorporating new behaviors is always necessary for change. As the true adage says, " If you continue to do the same thing you've always done, you'll keep getting the same results." Be willing to change and be intentional about transforming your life. Succeeding at anything never happens by accident. Make the necessary adjustments to create the life you desire. Change always begins with you. Identify behaviors and choices that are not serving you well. Then replace them with new actions that'll help you achieve your goal. Key #4 - Focus on making small, incremental gains each day. In our microwave mentality-based society, everyone wants a quick fix, but success at anything occurs in small steps, executed consistently. Marginal gains build up over time, which then propels you forward to achieving your goal. Key #5 - Be patient and respect the process. Don't work against yourself by trying to rush things and take short-cuts. There are many weight-loss gimmicks on the market that thrive off of the impatience of consumers. Perseverance pays off big time when you decide to take your time, so that your weight loss is sustained for the long-term. Key #6 - Empower yourself with knowledge. Learn how to lose weight properly, so you are able to maintain your weight-loss and to prevent any damage to your health. Seek credible sources, such as Health Coaches and other Fitness Professionals that can assist you in getting started the right way. That means, be willing to make the investment in yourself. You can't afford not to because the quality and longevity of your life depends on it. Key#7 - Find a support and accountability group. Connect with like-minded individuals that can help give you a boost of encouragement on those days you're struggling. Studies show that social support increases enjoyment and a personal sense of commitment to continue exercise and weight management programs. Make sure you surround yourself with people that won't sabotage your efforts to lose weight, but will hold you accountable when necessary. A little support from others can go a long way.
